Predictive dialer vs auto dialer: how each one dials and who needs it

Predictive dialer vs auto dialer comes down to pace: a predictive system rings several numbers at once and guesses when an agent will be free, while an auto dialer calls one number after another. Calling CRM is an auto dialer, not a predictive one.

What is the difference between a predictive dialer and an auto dialer?

A predictive dialer rings many numbers at once and connects answered calls to free agents; an auto dialer rings one number at a time. Calling CRM does the second.

How a predictive dialer works

A predictive dialer looks at how long calls last and how often people answer, then dials more numbers than there are free agents. If the guess is right, an agent finishes one conversation just as the next person picks up. If too many answer at once, some people hear silence or a recorded message because nobody is free.

That last case is an abandoned call. In the United States, 47 CFR 64.1200(a)(7) (read on 23 October 2026) caps abandoned calls at three percent of live-answered telemarketing calls per 30-day campaign, and counts a call as abandoned if no live representative joins within two seconds of the greeting.

How an auto dialer works

An auto dialer takes a list and rings the first number. When that call ends, it waits for a short gap you choose, then rings the next one. Nobody is ever connected to an empty line, because only one call is in progress at a time.

In Calling CRM the auto dialer works through a filtered list, an imported file, assigned leads or today’s follow-ups. Unanswered numbers can be retried as many as three times, a ring limit stops long unanswered rings, and a call cut by a network fault before ringing is tried again automatically.

Predictive dialer vs auto dialer vs power dialer

A power dialer sits between the two: it dials one or a fixed number of lines per agent as soon as the agent is free, without predicting. Many people use "power dialer" and "auto dialer" for the same one-at-a-time behaviour. The power dialer app page covers that angle, and the guide to dialers in BPO lists every type.

Predictive dialer vs auto dialer: which one to choose

  • Pick a predictive dialer when you run a large desk team, call very large lists, and can monitor abandonment to stay within the rules where you operate.
  • Pick an auto dialer when callers work from mobiles, when each conversation matters more than raw volume, or when your team is small enough that idle time is rare.
  • Whatever you pick, check the calling rules for each country you dial into. See is auto dialer legal for a starting point.
FAQ

Predictive dialer vs auto dialer FAQ

Are predictive dialers legal?

They are legal in many places, but heavily regulated. In the US, for example, abandoned calls are capped at three percent of live-answered telemarketing calls per 30-day campaign. Check the rules in each country you call.

What is a predictive dialer?

A predictive dialer is server software that starts calls to a batch of numbers in parallel, then routes whoever picks up to the next free agent. It forecasts that availability from past call data.

What is the difference between a predictive dialer and a power dialer?

A power dialer dials a fixed number of lines when an agent is free, with no prediction. A predictive dialer adjusts how many it dials based on expected answers and call lengths.

Why do predictive dialers cause silent calls?

Silent calls happen when more people answer than there are free agents. The dialer has connected a call but nobody is available to speak.

Is an auto dialer slower than a predictive dialer?

Per agent, an auto dialer places fewer calls per hour because it waits for each call to end. In return, every answered call reaches a person ready to talk.

Can a small team use a predictive dialer?

It rarely makes sense. With only a few agents, the prediction is less accurate and dropped calls become more likely, so a one-at-a-time auto dialer usually fits better.

Is Calling CRM a predictive dialer?

No. Calling CRM works sequentially: it places a single call over the SIM or WhatsApp, waits for it to finish, then moves to the next lead, with retries and a ring limit.

What is the best dialer for a mobile sales team?

For callers working from their own phones, the best dialer is an auto dialer that runs on the phone and logs every call. Calling CRM is built for that use.

Does an auto dialer leave voicemails?

Not in Calling CRM. It rings each number and moves on based on your ring limit and redial settings; the caller decides what to do on each call.

What is an abandoned call rate?

It is the share of answered calls that were not connected to a live person in time. US rules measure it per calling campaign over 30 days.

Which dialer gives agents more context before the call?

Usually an auto dialer, because it starts one call for one lead. The lead’s status and last note can show as the phone rings.
